June 2000

The County Senior Championship for those over 55 years of age took place at Bath G.C.on Friday 19th.May and attracted 25 entries. The competition started at 9 a.m. and the first bit of excitement was when the organising committee were stuck in a traffic jam but thanks to the mobile phone and perhaps divine intervention they arrived hotfoot at about one minute to nine and all was well in the end. Club Secretary Paul Ware had stepped into the breach and got everything sorted and the SGU appreciated his help.

The local club members put up a good show and occupied the first 3 places. The Somerset Senior Champion for 2000 is Peter Owen of Bath who returned a gross score of 76. He was followed by Bath players Simon Calvert Jones with 78 and Ian Glasgow with an 80.

Following these scores the best gross score in the 55 - 64 years age group was an 81 returned by the County Secretary Graham Yates of Taunton Vale and in the over 65's, Don Burrows of The Mendip returned an 83.

To mark the new millenium Geoff Bacon of Bath, Burnham and Saunton who has been closely connected with both the SGU and EGU affairs for many years presented a very attractive Silver Salver for the player returning the best net score on the Championship Day and the inaugural winner was Derek Sutton of Clevedon with 81 - 11 = 70. In second place was Mike Baker of Burnham with 81 - 10 = 71 whilst third place went to Ian Stratton of Bath with 82 - 9 = 73.

The Bath course was in very good order for the event and County President David Kent (Burnham) expressed everyone's thanks to the club members and staff for all they had done to make it such a successful day.
