Competition Terms and Conditions

This page contains a set of General Terms and Conditions applying to all competitions and also specific additional sets of terms and conditions applying to each competition. GENERAL TERMS & CONDITIONS

The following General Terms & Conditions apply to all competitions.

  • The current general conditions (Rule 20) relating to Somerset Golf Union Championships and tournaments will apply to all competitions. Copies of these rules are also available at affiliated clubs.
  • Competitors must be of Amateur status as defined by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews.
  • Competitors must be a member of a golf club affiliated to the Somerset Golf Union, or must have been born in the County and be a member of an affiliated club in another County.
  • Home Club handicap certificates dated within two weeks of the competition will be required for all Competitions.
  • Competitors will not be allowed to ride on motorised buggy cars.
  • For Juniors/Colts events: Although competitors may use the services of a caddy, this person may not be a close relative.
  • Details of Entry Fees and Closing Dates for entries can be seen on the Standard Entry Form. Entry Forms must be received by the Competition & Fixtures Administrator on or before the Closing Date for the competition.
  • A copy of Starting Sheets will be sent to all Clubs.

County Foursomes Conditions

  • No competitor may have represented another County at golf during the last 12 months.
  • Handicap Limit: Combined handicaps may not exceed 24 for any team
  • In the event of a tie the Competition will be decided by a play off on the same day as the competition, over such holes as the Competition Committee shall decide.
  • The County Foursomes is a 36 Hole Gross event.
  • No competitor is eligible to receive more than one prize.

    The winning team will each receive a voucher valued at £50.00
    The runner up team will each receive a voucher valued at £40.00
    Third place team will each receive a voucher valued at £30.00
    The team with the best Net score will each receive a voucher valued at £30.00
    The team with the second best Net score will each receive a voucher valued at £25.00

Colts Championship Conditions
(Run in conjunction with the Junior Championships)

  • No competitor may have taken part in the last 12 months in the Championship for this Category in another County, or have represented another County at golf during that period.

  • Competitors must be over 18 and under 21 years of age on the 1st January of the year of the competition.
  • Handicap Limit is 14
  • In the event of a tie the Competition will be decided by a play off on the same day as the competition, over such holes as the Competition Committee shall decide.
  • The Colts Championship is a Gross event
  • No competitor is eligible to receive more than one prize

    The winner will receive the J M M Richardson Trophy, a medal and a voucher valued at £50.00
    The runner up will receive a voucher valued at £30.00
    Third place will receive a voucher valued at £25.00
    The Best Net score will receive a voucher valued at £25.00
    The second Best Net score will receive a voucher valued at £20.00

Junior Championship Conditions
(Run in conjunction with the Colts Championships)

  • No competitor may have taken part in the last 12 months in the Championship for this Category in another County, or have represented another County at golf during that period.
  • Competitors must be under 18 years of age on the 1st January of the year of the competition.
  • Handicap Limit: 14
  • In the event of a tie the Competition will be decided by a play off on the same day as the competition, over such holes as the Competition Committee shall decide.
  • The Junior Championship is a Gross event
  • No competitor is eligible to receive more than one prize.

    The winner will receive the John Hill Cup, a medal and a voucher valued at £50.00
    The runner up will receive a voucher valued at £30.00
    Third place will receive a voucher valued at £25.00
    The Best Net score will receive a voucher valued at £25.00
    The second best Net score will receive a voucher valued at £20.00
    The third best Net score will receive a voucher valued at £10.00

Under 14 Years Junior Championship Conditions

  • No competitor may have taken part in the last 12 months in the Championship for this Category in another County, or have represented another County at golf during that period.
  • Competitors must be under 14 years of age on the 1st January of the year of the competition.
  • Handicap Limit: 28
  • In the event of a tie the Competition will be decided by a play off on the same day as the competition, over such holes as the Competition Committee shall decide.
  • The Junior Championship is a Gross event
  • No competitor is eligible to receive more than one prize.

    The winner will receive the C.F.Carr Cup, a medal and a voucher valued at £40.00
    The runner up will receive a voucher valued at £30.00
    Third place will receive a voucher valued at £20.00
    The Best Net score will receive a voucher valued at £20.00
    The second best Net score will receive a voucher valued at £15.00
    The third best Net score will receive a voucher valued at £10.00

Seniors Championship Conditions

  • No competitor may have taken part in the last 12 months in the Championship for this Category in another County, or have represented another County at golf during that period.
  • Competitors must be over 55 years of age on 1st January in the year of the competition.
  • Handicap Limit: 14
  • In the event of a tie the Competition will be decided by a play off on the same day as the competition, over such holes as the Competition Committee shall decide.
  • The Seniors Championship is a Gross event
  • No competitor is eligible to receive more than one prize.

    The winner will receive the Past President's Cup, a Medal and a voucher valued at £50.00
    The runner up will receive a voucher valued at £40.00
    Third place will receive a voucher valued at £30.00
    The Best Net score will receive the Millennium Salver (presented by G G Bacon) and a voucher valued at £30.00
    The second best Net score will receive a voucher valued at £20.00
    The third best Net score will receive a voucher valued at £15.00

County Championship Conditions

  • No competitor may have taken part in the last 12 months in the Championship for this Category in another County, or have represented another County at golf during that period.
  • Handicap Limit: 7
  • In the event of a tie the Competition will be decided by a play off on the same day as the competition, over such holes as the Competition Committee shall decide.
  • The County Championship is a Gross event
  • No competitor is eligible to receive more than one prize.

    The winner will receive the Championship Trophy, a Silver Medal and a voucher valued at £100.00
    The winner is also invited at the expense of the Somerset Golf Union to represent the county at the 'Champion of Champions Tournament' (see Fixtures for details)
    The runner up will receive a voucher valued at £80.00
    Third place will receive a voucher valued at £60.00
    Fourth place will receive a voucher valued at £40.00
    The President's Prize will go to the best Colts player (18-21) - a voucher valued at £40.00
    The Captain's Prize will go to the 2nd best Colts player - a voucher valued at £20.00
    The Arthur Evans Cup will go to the best Junior player - a voucher valued at £40.00

Conditions for the Champion Club Event
(run in conjunction with the County Championship)

  • Competitors must have been members of their Club since 1st January in the year of the competition. No competitor may have represented another County at golf during that period.
  • Handicaps: This is a Gross Competition.
  • Clubs may enter teams of three players, members of which must also be playing in the County Championship.
  • Team members must be nominated prior to the commencement of play of the County Championships.
  • In the event of a tie the Competition will be decided on the basis of the afternoon rounds, taking the last 18 holes, then 9, then 6, then 3, or finally by such manner as the Competition Committee shall decide.
  • The Champion Club is a Gross event
  • The winning team will receive the Champion Club Trophy and vouchers valued at £20 each
  • The winning Club is also invited to represent the County at the 'EGU Champion Club Tournament' (see Fixtures for more details)
  • The Somerset Golf Union will assist with the expenses for that competition

Junior Champion Club Conditions

  • Competitors must have been members of their Club since 1st January in the year of the competition. No competitor may have represented another County at golf during the last 12 months.
  • Competitors must be under 18 years of age on 1st January in the year of the competition.
  • Competitors may only represent their nominated home club.
  • Handicap Limit: Boys 24, Girls 36
  • This competition is a team event consisting of four players, Boys or Girls.
  • The winning team shall be the club with the lowest aggregate net score over 18 holes taking the best three scores of the four players.
  • In the event of a tie the score of the fourth player will decide the Competition.
  • Entry is limited to one team per Club.
  • The Junior Champion Club is a Net event
  • The winning team will receive the Junior Champion Club Trophy and vouchers valued at £25 each
  • The winning Club is also invited to represent the County at the 'English Junior Champion Club Tournament' (see Fixtures for more details)
  • The Somerset Golf Union will assist with the expenses for that competition
  • The runners up will each receive a voucher valued at £20.00
  • The third placed team will each receive vouchers valued at £15.00

Conditions for Category 2, 3 & 4 Championships

  • No competitor may have taken part in the last 12 months in the Championship for this Category in another County, or have represented another County at golf during that period.
  • Handicap Limits:
      Category 2: between 6 and 12 on the closing date
      Category 3: between 13 and 20 on the closing date
      Category 4: between 21 and 28 on the closing date
  • In the event of a tie the Competition will be decided by a card play off (Countback) on the same day as the competition
  • In the event that the meeting is over-subscribed, there will be a ballot for places based on the date of receipt of each entry. ie first come first served.
  • These Championships are Gross events
  • No competitor is eligible to receive more than one prize.
  • Prizes will be awarded in each category as follows:

    The Best Gross will receive a medal and a voucher valued at £50.00
    The runner up gross will receive a voucher valued at £40.00
    Third place gross will receive a voucher valued at £30.00
    The best net score will receive a voucher valued at £30.00
    The second best net score will receive a voucher valued at £25.00
    The third best Net score will receive a voucher valued at £20.00

Trounson Trophy Conditions
(see also separate conditions for President's Trophy)

  • Competitors may only represent their nominated Home club (for handicap purposes).
  • Handicap Limit: 18 maximum (ie. competitors on higher handicaps may play but must play off 18)
  • Entry is restricted to one team of four players from each affiliated club of the Somerset Golf Union.
  • Players must be named before the first player in a team commences play.
  • The three best scores of the team will be aggregated to decide the winning team
  • In the event of a tie the score of the fourth player will be taken into account
  • In the event that there remains a tie after this the Competition Committee shall rule upon the manner of deciding the winners.
  • The Trounson Trophy is a Net Team event.
  • The Windwhistle Challenge Trophy (presented by Leonard Fisher Esq of Windwhistle Golf & Country Club) will be held by the leading visiting team.

    The winners will receive the Trounson Trophy and vouchers valued at £25.00
    The runners up will receive vouchers valued at £20.00
    The third placed team will receive vouchers valued at £15.00
    The fourth placed team will receive vouchers valued at £10.00

Conditions for the President's Trophy

  • No competitor may have taken part in the last 12 months in the Championship for this Category in another County, or have represented another County at golf during that period.
  • Only those playing in the Trounson Trophy on the same day are eligible to enter.
  • Handicap Limit: 18 maximum
  • In the event of a tie the Competition will be decided by a count back over the last 9 holes played, then 6, then 3 and finally by such manner as the Competition Committee shall decide.
  • Entries for this event may be made on the day.
  • The President's Trophy is an 18 Hole Stroke play Net event
  • No competitor is eligible to receive more than one prize

    The winner will receive the Trophy and a voucher valued at £50.00
    The runner up will receive a voucher valued at £40.00
    Third place will receive a voucher valued at £30.00
    The best gross score will receive a voucher valued at £30.00
    The second best gross will receive a voucher valued at £25.00

Conditions for the Seniors Autumn Meeting

  • No competitor may have taken part in the last 12 months in the Championship for this Category in another County, or have represented another County at golf during that period.
  • Competitors must be over 55 years of age on the 1st January in the year of the competition
  • In the event of a tie the Competition will be decided by a count back over the last 9 holes, then 6, then 3 of the competition and finally by such manner as the Competition Committee shall decide.
  • The Seniors Autumn Meeting is a Net and Stableford event.
  • Age group prizes will be awarded in the following categories, Age 55-59, Age 60-64, Age 65-70, Aged over 70
  • No competitor is eligible to receive more than one prize.

    The Best Net score in this event will receive the Sir Roger Hollis KBE CB Cup, and a voucher valued at £50.00
    The second best Net score will receive a voucher valued at £40.00
    The third best Net score will receive a voucher valued at £30.00
    The Best Stableford score in this event will receive the George Smith Cup and a voucher valued at £40.00
    The second best Stableford score will receive a voucher valued at £30.00
    The third best Stableford score will receive a voucher valued at £20.00

SOMERSET BOWL RULES

This competition is open to clubs affiliated to
The Somerset Golf Union

To Qualify
A player representing a Club;

  • Must be of Amateur status as defined by The Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St.Andrews
  • May only represent his Home Club
  • May not play for two Clubs in any one year
  • May not have taken part in a Championship of any kind at any other County in the preceding year
  • Must conform (in the case of the Seniors’ competition) to The English Golf Union’s definition of a Senior Player, i.e. over 55 years of age as at the 1st January in the year in which the competition is played

Format and Conditions of Play

  1. The Competition shall be played by Foursomes match play over 18 holes
  2. Each Club Team shall consist of 10 players (5 pairs)
  3. The maximum handicap for any player shall be 18. Any player with a handicap greater than this may play But will only be accorded a handicap of 18 for this event
  4. The stroke allowance shall be 1/2 of the difference of the combined handicaps of the players in each game
  5. The Team captains shall declare and exchange the names of their teams with pairings and handicaps, in the order in which they will play, at least 10 minutes before the start of the match. This exchange will complete the draw and no changes are permitted to the order except in the case of ‘7’ below
  6. Games must tee off in the order declared, and all games must be played from the white tee markers
  7. In the interests of fairness, a game that cannot start in its declared starting order due to some exceptional circumstances, may be put back to the end of the field. If this situation should occur, and that pair is still not available and ready to play within 5 minutes after the other four games have teed off, they will forfeit that game. No replacement of players will be allowed after the Captains have made the exchanges as in condition 5 (above)
  8. All games must be played to a result. In the event of a tie after 18 holes then the game concerned must continue on a Sudden Death basis until a result is achieved. (If the overall match result is already decided then this will not be necessary)
  9. Unless a result has been achieved, as in condition 8, and the match has had to be abandoned because Play has been suspended by The Home Club Committee, or persons responsible in that capacity, another date must be arranged. In this event any previous individual results will not count and the match must begin again. It will not be compulsory in these circumstances for a Club to field the same teams as in the abandoned match
  10. Players are expected to respect the Host Clubs’ dress regulations, particularly when catering facilities are arranged. Each Club shall be responsible for its own costs associated with the provision of any refreshments or meal after a match. It is recommended that this be agreed in advance by both teams
  11. ‘Buggy’ cars are not permitted
  12. The draw for the First round (which will include the draw for the neutral venues) will be made at the Annual Dinner of the Somerset Golf Union. (Usually in November annually)
  13. The draw for subsequent rounds (once again at neutral venues) will be supervised by the current President of the Somerset Golf Union
  14. Notwithstanding the fact that matches are to played at Neutral Venues it is the responsibility of the first named team to arrange the fixture, and to confirm details with the host club
  15. Each round must be played on or by the stipulated date. Failure to do so will result in the elimination from the competition of both clubs
  16. The result of each round must be communicated to the Hon Competitions Secretary of the S G U as soon as possible after the conclusion of the match
  17. The arrangements for the Semi Finals and Finals, (which will be played on the same day and at the same club in the case of the ‘Mens’ competition, and on different days in respect of the ‘Seniors’), will be decided by the Competitions Sub Committee of The Somerset Golf Union. On the respective final days, the Somerset Golf Union will offer the traditional post match supper at the host club
  18. The ‘Bowls’ will be re-presented by The President of the Somerset Golf Union at the conclusion of the Final, and re-presented at the Annual Dinner of the Somerset Golf Union, at which the winning teams or their representatives are expected to be present

THE PICKERIDGE BOWL RULES
(Inter-Club Scratch Knock Out Competition)

This competition is open to clubs affiliated to
The Somerset Golf Union

To Qualify
A player representing a Club;

  • Must be of Amateur status as defined by The Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St.Andrews
  • May only represent his Home Club
  • May not play for two Clubs in any one year
  • May not have taken part in a Championship of any kind at any other County in the preceding year

Format and Conditions of Play

  1. The Competition shall be played by Singles match play over 18 holes
  2. Each Club Team shall consist of 5 players
  3. This is an inter club scratch knock out competition
  4. The Team captains shall declare and exchange the names of their teams in the order in which they will play, at least 10 minutes before the start of the match. This exchange will complete the draw and no changes are permitted to the order except in the case of ‘6’ below
  5. Games must tee off in the order declared, and all games must be played from the white tee markers
  6. In the interests of fairness, a game that cannot start in its declared order due to some exceptional circumstances, may be put back to the end of the field. If this situation should occur, and that player is still not available and ready to play within 5 minutes after the other four games have teed off, that game will be forfeit. No replacement of players will be allowed after the Captains have made the exchanges as in condition 5 (above)
  7. All games must be played over 18 holes the winning player scoring 1 point for his team. In the event of a tie after 18 holes then the game is halved and will score ½. point to each team. The team with the most points at the end of play is the winner
  8. If, after the completion of 18 holes by each player a result has not been achieved, then the last game out shall continue on a sudden death basis until a decision is reached. (See 6/ above. The rearranged game under that condition then becomes the last game for play off purposes irrespective of its original place in the match.)
  9. In the event that no result has been achieved and the match has had to be abandoned because Play has been suspended by The Home Club Committee, or persons responsible in that capacity, another date must be arranged. In this event any previous individual results will not count and the match must begin again. It will not be compulsory in these circumstances for a Club to field the same teams as in the abandoned match
  10. Matches will be played on neutral venues amongst the competing clubs. Entry to this competition by clubs is not automatic and the appropriate entry form must be completed within the prescribed time limits
  11. The draw for the First round (which will include the draw for the neutral venues) will be made by the President of The Somerset Golf Union
  12. The draw for subsequent rounds (once again at neutral venues) will also be supervised by the current President of the Somerset Golf Union
  13. Notwithstanding the fact that matches are to played at Neutral Venues it is the responsibility of the first named team to arrange the fixture, and to confirm details with the host club
