Dixon wins Play Off

Dixon wins Play Off to add the Somerset County Championship to his impressive haul for 2000.

At the end of a week that saw his selection to the full England side for the home countries Internationals, and his appointment as leader of the three-man England representative side to contest the Chiberta Grand Prix in France later this month, David Dixon from Enmore Park Golf Club added the Somerset County Championship to his already impressive list of successes for the year 2000.

The championship was held for the first time on The Park Course at Orchardleigh Golf Club near Frome and what a marvellous venue it turned out to be. The course was playing its full 6831 yards and was presented in immaculate condition. Unusually for our climate the players had to cope with one of the hottest days of the year so far and this reflected in some of the scores posted.

At the end of 36 Holes Dave Dixon and Lee Corfield from Burnham and Berrow Golf Club were tied on 148 and a four-hole medal play-off was held. Dixon took the lead with an eagle on the par 5 second hole and Lee never really recovered thereafter. So Dave Dixon adds this championship to his superb win at The Lytham trophy in May, and victory at the Midlands Open in June.

Third place on 149 was taken by Orchardleigh member Ross Jones, with Matt Lock also from Enmore Park picking up fourth with 151. Rob Perrett won the Colts division from Clevedon Golf Club on 152 and the runner up was Andrew Evans of Cannington Golf Club on 156. Adam Reading also from Cannington won the ever-increasing Junior division with a 156.

The Champion Club team event was won by the Clevedon Golf Club team comprising The Perrett Brothers, Dan and Rob, and England player John Morgan.

Overall a great days golf for all concerned, especially for Paul Williams of Cannington Golf Club who scored his first ever Hole-in-One on the par three 195yds 10th Hole with a shot that never looked like going anywhere else!

All this augers well for Golf in the County who have won the right to represent the South West at the County Finals in September at Little Aston Golf Club near Sutton Coldfield. There they will face the might of Yorkshire (winners for the last three years) Surrey, and Warwickshire in a three-day round robin competition. County Captain Adrian Deakins from Worlebury Golf Club will be announcing his team in the next few days and preparation by the possibles and probables is already well under way. This will be the best opportunity for some while for Somerset to go the whole way and the squad members are well aware of this.

In the meanwhile if you fancy a great game of golf in a superb setting give Trevor Atkinson, the Golf Manager at Orchardleigh a ring and if our experience is anything to go by you will be accorded a warm welcome at one of Somerset's premier golfing venues.
